This is a roundup of news or activities in the past few days that may be of interest to people.
Agilent Technologies Inc. has announced that the latest model library for Mitsubishi Electric’s nonlinear GaAs and GaN RF devices is now available for use with Agilent’s Advanced Design System. The upgraded library works seamlessly with ADS 2009 Update 1, as well as prior ADS releases. ADS2011 and future versions will also be supported. The model can be obtained by contacting Mitsubishi Electric. The new ADS model library includes high-power GaN HEMT and low-noise HEMT devices commonly used in base station and direct-broadcast satellite receivers as well as other radio communications equipment. The library helps designers better explore design alternatives in order to meet demanding performance specifications with a cost-effective solution. The library includes an ADS symbol for schematic capture, a simulation model that includes parasitic effects. It also covers a broad variety of body sizes and part values that enable sweeps and optimizations.
ASELTA Nanographics has completed its first round financing with A Plus Finance and CEA Investissement. Based on 10 years of CEA/Leti development they are productizing software that hopes to improve yield while lowering lithography writing time costs. Inscale, ASELTA software, uses their data preparation process to optimize their electron lithography steps in IC manufacturing, whether mask or maskless. Inscale proposes a unique trade-off between pattern fidelity and writing time, allowing customers to reduce their costs while augmenting quality.
Carbon Design Systems has announced availability of virtual reference platforms on its Carbon IP Exchange Web Portal, found at www.carbonipexchange.com. Available for many of the most popular virtual models, including the ARM® Cortex™ A15, ARM Cortex A9, ARM Cortex R4 and MIPS® 34Kc, they contain models, software and configuration information to enable a designer to be productive in minutes. Some designers use these platforms for debugging firmware and for doing performance optimization within minutes. Others use a virtual reference platform as a starting point to eliminate the traditional learning curve associated with using new intellectual property (IP). Processor models are combined with peripheral models, such as the ARM PL301 and ARM PL190, to form a reference implementation used as a starting point for further platform creation or as a standalone design environment. Software is included with each platform to configure the processor and peripherals and to execute a sample program.
YouTube, Lenovo, and Space Adventures in cooperation with space agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), today announced the sixty finalists of YouTube Space Lab (youtube.com/spacelab), the global science competition that challenges 14-18 year-olds to design a science experiment that can be performed in space. YouTube Space Lab received thousands of video submissions from more than 80 countries, a remarkable number given the unique challenge of designing an experiment that could actually be carried out in space - something that has traditionally been the mission of qualified astronauts and scientists. Entrants not only described their science experiment ideas via video, but demonstrated and animated the procedures they were submitting.
Until January 24, the YouTube community will be invited to judge these entries alongside a prestigious panel of judges, including renowned scientist, Professor Stephen Hawking, William Gerstenmaier, Leland Melvin, Frank De Winne, Akihiko Hoshide and Cirque du Soleil’s founder Guy Laliberté, to determine the winners. YouTube users and the judging panel will determine 6 regional winners (2 teams from each of the 3 regions) who will travel to Washington, DC, where the global winners (2 teams from each age group) will be announced in March.
In 2012, I (David Yeh) have the honor of serving the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation as the Award Committee Chair. I am pleased to publicize the call for nominations for the A Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electronic Design Automation, which is presented by the ACM Special Interest Group on Design Automation and the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation.
The Award is to honor a person or persons for an outstanding technical contribution within the scope of electronic design automation, as evidenced by a paper published at least ten years before the presentation of the award (at the Design Automation Conference 2012).
The award is based on the impact of the paper’s contribution.
Criteria: The award shall be based on impact of the paper in the field of electronic design automation published ten years or more before the year the award is presented. The paper must have passed through a peer-review process before publication, be an archived conference or journal publication available from or published by either ACM or IEEE, and be a seminal paper where an original idea was first described.
Follow-up papers and extended descriptions of the work may be cited in the nomination, but the award is given for the initial original contribution.
The closing date is February 1, 2012!
Please consider recognizing the authors of outstanding papers in the area of EDA.
More details are on the CEDA and ACM SIGDA websites.
